The Essence of Travel

The Essence of Travel

The travel bug is an inner fire, an inexplicable impulse that drives us to break free from routine and venture into the unknown. It's not just the desire to collect passport stamps, but a deep need to discover something beyond the visible, beyond the everyday. It's the impulse that leads us to explore not only new landscapes, but also the many versions of ourselves, those that only emerge when we confront the unexpected.

We travel to find ourselves, to discover ourselves, because in every destination, in every corner of the world, there is a part of ourselves we haven't yet discovered. That is the essence of travel: an inner journey as well as an outer one, a search for meaning, for connections, for experiences that transform and define us.

I remember a day in September when I made a decision that would change my life completely, though I didn't know it at the time. After eight years living in Madrid, I ventured into the unknown, leaving behind a comfortable life, close friends, and a stable job. My destination: Australia. The most distant country I could imagine, a place so remote that, at 16 hours away from my beloved Dominican Republic, it seemed like another world.

This wasn't my first trip. I had already traveled through Europe by train with my father, gotten lost in major capital cities with friends, and experienced the solitude of traveling alone in Peru. However, despite all the adventures I had, this time was different. This time, I was searching for something bigger than myself, something I couldn't name at the time.

When I arrived in Australia, my expectations for my life as a traveler collided with harsh reality. Melbourne greeted me with rainy weather and overwhelming loneliness. I had never before felt distance so intensely. I was alone, thousands of kilometers from anyone I knew, in a place where I wasn't understood and I didn't understand anyone. The freedom I had imagined felt more like an abyss.

But it was in that abyss that I discovered my traveler's essence. Over time, I began connecting with other travelers. I remember a simple post in a Facebook group that changed the course of my journey. There, I found people who, like me, were looking for more than just a superficial experience. We met at a hostel in Tasmania, rented a car, and explored the island, sharing stories, laughter, and, most importantly, our vulnerability. It was there that I first heard about the "traveler's essence," and since then, I haven't stopped asking myself: Why do I travel? What am I really looking for? How do I want to leave my mark on every place I visit?
